Your Twilight, It Torments Me

NOW. *deep breath*

I see a lot of blog posts talking about Sarth 3D, about how difficult it was and how so much time was spent on the encounter, how the guild really had to pull together to accomplish it.

I’ve no doubt all this is true. What is lacking, however, is talk of the road to victory. Perhaps <Unemployed> is a bit on the slow side, but we’re still working on it, and I’d like to share a little bit of our journey with you.

We’ve finally gotten to the point, when working on Sartharion with three Drakes, that we’ve stopped loosing people early on to stupid crap like fissures and flame walls. Our DPS are staying alive, our Healers are staying alive and, by proxy, our tanks are staying alive and drakes are dying.

Now we can finally start to troubleshoot the actual encounter.

Thus we have discovered what a bitch Twilight Torment can really be.

Now, I’m not certain -exactly- what our particular problem is, but I can appreciate some of the challenges. Tenebron is dying at a good pace (finally). He’s down to 10-15% by the time Shadron lands and that’s without a bloodlust. With bloodlust we were able to kill him 2-3 seconds before Shadron activated.

The issue now is getting Shadron dead enough that DPS don’t kill themselves trying to get him down the rest of the way so they can pop into the portal and nix the acolytes.

It’s got to be rough to be DPS during that phase. Here you are, needing to push everything you can to get the drake down, yet the more you push the more you kill yourself. Can you afford that next shot? Will a healer get to you in time? Will your DoTs be the end of you?

I daren’t even think of the burden on the healers.

Needless to say, we’re not Twilight Vanquishers yet, but we definitely made progress. Finall we can start working on the meat of the matter instead of just repeating “Stop standing in the fire”.

At least, that’s as long as we don’t get unannounced AFKs. But that’s a subject for another time. *grumble*

Fun Fact – I can survive standing in a void zone. I know because I did it last night, 3 times…

    Can you make one of those handy dandy charts again? I would like to know who did die from fissures and lava walls. I know I didn’t eat any last night. My issue came from adds.

  1. Some hints that you might not know.

    You can survive standing in a void zone – if Shadron and Vesperon aren’t up. It’s possible if you’ve got enough health. If they’re up, it’ll do something like 35-40k damage. But you should still not stand in them anyway šŸ™‚

    Twilight torment has an internal 2s cooldown. This means that in practice you can treat it as a 2.5k dot every two seconds, just like Sapphiron.

    Twilight Torment is triggered by DoTs being applied and ticking.
    Twilight torment is NOT triggered by anything that does not target. So hurricane, blizzard, flamestrike, rain of fire, whirlwind – all can avoid it.

    If you can get Tenebron to 10-15% before Shadron lands, I’d almost certainly recommend using your bloodlust on Shadron, not on Tenebron. The reason is not the DPS – that stays about the same. It’s because the healing during Shadron is harder than the healing on Tenebron, so having more healing during Shadron can make things more stable.

    Also, are you spending any time killing adds between Tenebron and Shadron? We found it to be way more stable to spend a few seconds AoEing down the adds after Tenebron dies, including a lot of the flames.

    MT: Druid on Sartharion

    OT1: Warrior on whelps and fire elemtanls
    OT2: Warior on Tenebron, then adds and finally on Vesperon
    OT3: Druid, dps on Tenebron, tank Shadron, dps Vesperon

    This setup really helped us a lot. You don’t have to worry about moving around the drakes or a single tank taking insane amount of damage (since no OT have to tank two drakes at the same time)

    Kal – That’s VERY interesting about the un-targeted AoE during Twilight Torment. I wonder if it would be viable then, once Vesperon lands, to attempt to AoE the rest of the way to kill Shadron the rest of the way?

    Also – does Death and Decay trigger Twilight Torment? We’ve had some troubles with the ember/whelp tanks killing themselves trying to get mobs off of healers. Thunderclap killed Bell, and DK diseases got poor Doom >_<

    We haven’t been doing any AoE yet, but we have moved from having one tank on blazes and whelps to having 2. I suspect AoE might be added to our attempts next week, I’ll make sure to mention it.

    I’m also pretty sure that we’ll continue to save our bloodlust for Shadron. I think using it during Tenebron was just to see what would happen, how we’d do, etc.

    Razor – Here’s the setup we have

    MT: Death Knight on Sartharion
    OT1: Druid on all 3 drakes (moi)
    OT2: Warrior on Embers and Whelps

    New last week we asked one of our dps (a DK) to switch over to tanking to help out the Warior on embers and whelps.

  2. I have a tip that will help you immensely. Get a warlock to tank 3d Sarth. You might be thinking wtf by now, just hear me out.

    I have downed Sarth 3d multiple times with my guild. At first, I was MT’ing because of the health boost. Then we thought about a video some people saw, with a voidwalker tanking 3d sarth.

    So we got our friendly guild warlock to get all stamina gear. He was sitting at about 41k (buffed), and the void at about 78k! Now, despite the incredible health, the voidwalker has a resistance to Sarth’s breaths on top of it. That means when he breaths, it only hits for about 7k.

    All you need to do, is keep all dps off sarth the whole fight, until all drakes are dead (where a druid MT then picks sarth up, because the void doesn’t generate much rage). A couple hunters will misdirect to the Void, and the void will be against the wall.

    I kinda explained it badly, I’ll see if I can find the video again sometime. If you need me to explain more (if you plan on doing this strategy), then hit me up on Nidanar (night elf druid) on the realm Silvermoon sometime I’m on.

  4. We actually did our first attempt at Sarth-1D 10-man last night. Since I’m a paladin tank… I was on “Add patrol” by my lonesome. TBH, it was the most frantic encounter that I’ve ever attempted. Rounding up everything that moves with no ranged abilities and avoiding the Flame wall was… well… interesting.
    Was it just me or do most sucessful groups have 2 people on adds? What class does the best for picking them up? Do most groups make their Healers group up? Ok… sorry for so many questions but this was hella frustrating and I must be the BEST! šŸ˜€
